Planning Your First Cruise: Start With the Right Decisions
A practical first-cruise checklist covering departure ports, itineraries, cabins, arrival plans and the full vacation budget.
01 / TRAVEL JOURNAL
Begin with your vacation priorities
Before comparing ships, decide what you want the trip to feel like. A family hoping for busy afternoons and evening entertainment has different priorities from a couple seeking quiet mornings and long visits ashore. Give Sue your preferred travel dates, departure region, party size, children's ages and comfortable total budget. Add three essentials and three things you could happily skip. This makes comparisons more useful than choosing from attractive photographs alone.
02 / TRAVEL JOURNAL
Compare the itinerary, not just the destination
Two cruises visiting the same region can offer very different experiences. Look at the number of sea days, time scheduled in each port and the order of the stops. A short afternoon visit may not support the excursion you imagined. Departure-port convenience matters too: a lower fare can lose its advantage when flights, transfers and an additional hotel night are included. Compare the whole journey from your front door.
03 / TRAVEL JOURNAL
Choose a cabin for the people using it
Start with sleeping arrangements, then consider location and outdoor space. Ask how additional beds are configured and whether everyone will be comfortable when those beds are open. Travelers sensitive to noise should review nearby venues and connecting-door arrangements. Accessibility requirements deserve a specific discussion before booking. A cabin category name is only a starting point; the actual layout, occupancy rules and position should work for your party.
04 / TRAVEL JOURNAL
Build an arrival and spending plan
Separate the cruise fare from the rest of the vacation. Your comparison should account for transportation, pre-cruise accommodation, transfers, gratuities, optional dining, drinks, internet and activities ashore. Review cancellation terms and any protection options before paying. Plan arrival with room for transport disruptions rather than assuming a tight connection will succeed. Ask me to identify which amounts are confirmed and which remain estimates.

Prepare a useful first inquiry
Send your date flexibility, traveler ages, home airport or driving location, cabin preferences and any must-visit ports. Mention mobility, dietary or sensory needs early so suitable options can be researched. Before departure, verify travel documents with the cruise line and relevant government guidance for your citizenship and itinerary. Keep booking references, required documents and arrival details accessible. A thoughtful first conversation prevents many avoidable surprises later.
